FANN Meeting Agenda - May 24, 2021

FANN Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Recall that the Franklin Area Nonprofit Network (FANN) - is a Fanntastic group!!!

Q - Why start this group?

A - We started because

  • The business community has the Franklin Downtown Partnership or the United Regional Chamber of Commerce/Milford Chamber of Commerce to provide a ‘circle of friends’ for networking, sharing, etc.

  • The cultural organizations also have their new ‘circle of friends’ with the Franklin Cultural District designation and the coordination lead by the Franklin Cultural District Committee

  • The nonprofits based in Franklin did not (yet) have a similar ‘circle of friends’ to coordinate with, and yet of the groups/organizations or small businesses in the area, they could very well be the group most in need of one.

  • Hence, the desire to facilitate this gathering of the approx. 100 nonprofits based in Franklin. Ultimately the scope was decided to expand to include those 'serving' Franklin, not just those 'based' here.

Q - What are the Objectives for the group?

A - There are some initial objectives (so far) and we anticipate more to come as we go. Thus far we have

  1. Confirm listing of nonprofits and key contacts

  2. Facilitate a series of meetings to bring these folks to the table

    1. Help them understand who is around the table (introductions)

    2. Record the intros for reuse by each group and by Franklin TV, wfpr.fr radio as promos for the nonprofits

  3. Determine what the group wants to do going forward

  4. Minor but important detail take-aways

    1. Update the social services listing kept by the Town of Franklin

    2. Reinforce use of the Community calendar for event communications/awareness and importantly, planning future events

    3. Leverage Franklin.TV, wfpr.fm and Franklin Matters to "amplify the public good"

    4. other items to be determined by the group

Q - How do we find out who is included in this group?
A - The working list can be found on the web page. If you don't find an org that you think should be on the listing, use the form to add it. Or notify someone within that group so they can provide the accurate information for the listing.

Q - Our group is not a service-oriented group, should we still participate?
A - Yes, while we have the near term goal of updating the service directory, all nonprofits serving Franklin would benefit from the work we anticipate this group to do. There are a number of problems all nonprofits face, and the power of the group to help each other is what we look to tap into.

Q - Is there a membership fee?
A - No. We anticipate this being an informal group powered by volunteers with some infrastructure support provided by Franklin.TV. We anticipate the the time and effort of individuals representing the nonprofits should be able to provide enough for the group to succeed. The group may decide to become more formal (i.e. 501(c)3, etc.) at which point it may be appropriate to discuss membership.

New -> Nonprofit Management Certificate for Practitioners

METROWEST NONPROFIT NETWORK ANNOUNCES

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE

FOR PRACTITIONERS

For Immediate Release: Framingham, MA

May 10, 2021 – MetroWest Nonprofit Network (MWNN), in partnership with Framingham State University (FSU), is pleased to announce a new course offering: Nonprofit Management Certificate for Practitioners. This 12-week online course set to launch on September 24, 2021, is designed for individuals who are interested in furthering their knowledge and skills as nonprofit leaders, aspiring and emerging leaders, mid-level nonprofit managers, and individuals seeking to change careers and enter the nonprofit sector. The program, developed after a three-year planning process that involved feedback from nonprofit leaders, funders, community organizations, educators, and students has two key goals: providing future leaders with the practical skills needed to lead effective organizations and actively supporting individuals with diverse identities and experiences who are interested in a pathway to nonprofit leadership.

"Framingham State University is proud to partner with the MetroWest Nonprofit Network to diversify and expand nonprofit leadership in our region," said Dr. Constanza Cabello, Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement at Framingham State University. "It is critical that the face of leadership reflect the increasingly diverse population in MetroWest. We look forward to giving students the skills, tools, and network to lead in their organizations and in the community."

"We are thrilled to be able to offer this unique program to our community," said Sarah Baldiga, Chair of the MWNN and Co-founder and Executive Director of the Rise Above Foundation. "The Certificate program will amplify the impact of our MetroWest nonprofits by strengthening the skills of the passionate people who make them run. Our goal through this program is to give participants the chance to hear and learn from people in the field and to help shape the next generation of nonprofit leaders."

The certificate program will focus on five theme areas: Nonprofit Fundamentals, Organizations and People, Finances and Fundraising, Communications and Marketing, Evaluations and Impact, and Leading through Change. Program faculty bring a wide range of expertise and lived experiences to the program. Students will have an opportunity to build a professional network of mentors and colleagues that will support them beyond the completion of the program.

"This program builds on MWNN's thirty years of experience strengthening nonprofit leaders, building connections, and nurturing collaborations," said Anna Cross, Executive Director of MWNN. "One of the most important lessons we have learned during the pandemic is that nonprofit organizations play a critical role in identifying and responding to issues of equity, racial, economic, and social justice. We consider it an honor and an obligation to provide opportunities for future leaders to gain the skills, tools, and networks they need to meet the challenge of building a just and equitable world."

About MetroWest Nonprofit Network

MWNN was created in 1991, in response to the need to bring MetroWest nonprofits together to share ideas, resources, and professional development opportunities. Today, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, MWNN continues to offer the services and support that MetroWest nonprofits are seeking; opportunities for collaboration, connections to the expertise of their colleagues throughout the region, and access to resources that support and strengthen their organizations. Franklin Area NonProfit Network (FANN): meeting info and ACTIONS for April 19, 2021

Coming out of the Franklin Area NonProfit Network (FANN) kickoff meeting (3/29/21), we have the following notes and Actions

  • Frequency – at least monthly until we get up and running

  • Will try and lock in a standard day/time

  • Initial phase is for members to get to know each other.  This phase is expected to take anywhere from 4-10 meetings, depending on how many organizations want to get involved and the speed at which we can conduct the introductions.  Intent is to invite 10-12 organizations per meeting and provide them up to 5 mins each to tell all about their organization; with a focus on their mission, highlighting services provided and target audience.

  • During the introduction portion, all should listen carefully to identify touchpoints of connection, potential help or cross referral.

    • Issues raised from the organization will be placed in the parking lot for future consideration by the group (address via an ad-hoc small group to study or as an upcoming FANN Topic, or ??)

  • First topic up is Media 101 and speaker is Pete Fasciano, Franklin Community Cable (Franklin TV, Franklin Public Radio)

  • Also, will want to address creation of Leadership/Steering Comm and Website in either housekeeping or wrap up
